Wild Slovakia

Meet Europe's brown bears in the wild

Slovakia is home to one of Europe's strongest brown-bear populations — well over a thousand wild bears roam the Carpathian forests. I'm Radovan Haluza, a wildlife photographer and guide. I've spent years tracking bears in these mountains, I'm the face of the documentary series „Lebo medveď" and filmed „Hlas lesa". I'll take you safely to where you can watch — and photograph — a wild bear in its natural home.

My guiding grounds are Liptov and the High and Low Tatras (also Veľká Fatra and Poľana), where I know the terrain and the bears' movements intimately.

Good to know

Best time & why go guided

When to come

The season runs from April to October. Bears are most active at dawn and dusk, so tours are built around early mornings and evenings. Spring bears emerge hungry, summer offers the longest days, and early autumn brings intense feeding before winter.

Why with a guide

Brown bears naturally avoid people and attacks are rare. Going with an experienced guide is the safest and most successful way — I read the terrain, the wind and the animals' behaviour, and every tour starts with a safety briefing.
